Avermectins: man and animal, it's the same fight ...

The Nobel Prize 2015 for Medicine, awarded for the development of antiparasitic drugs, recalls the major human health challenge of fighting against parasitic diseases and illustrates the involvement of Inra researchers towards the "One Health" dynamics

Avermectins are used to treat parasitic diseases, such as river blindness and lymphatic filariasis, affecting an estimated 150 million people worldwide.

  • However, avermectins were initially developed in farm animals, against intestinal, cutaneous and pulmonary parasites.
  • Research on avermectins has been conducted over the past three decades at INRA / ENVT and continued at TOXALIM. In particular, they permit to optimize the use of such drugs in livestock, also contributing to improving its use in humans.

Thus, the history of these drugs illustrates the "One health" concept : animal and human"
